Upon a fairy morning,
I bade the world to pause
in all its human bustlings,
with all their cares and flaws.
I saw the fae door open.
It smiled, and I did, too.
And in the space of one held breath,
I tenderly stepped through.
At once, I was surrounded
by rare and verdant things!
I heard the sighs of bumblebees
aflight on drowsy wings.
I watched the robin comb his feathers,
bathed in drops of mist,
and came to feel
that all our strivings
pale compared to this.
For every moth and milkweed sings,
each swooping swallow shows,
and every blue jay shouts with pride
what every wild thing knows:
That every green and dewdropped leaf,
each tufted seed and feather,
every strand of spider silk
knits all this world together.
And we, if we are still enough,
and kind enough, and smart,
can slip beyond the fairy door
to find a peaceful heart.
For we are made of all that’s wild.
We are nearly fae!
So I shall keep that door ajar.
One day, I might walk through and stay!

Diane Rains and Stu Janis have been a performing arts team and married couple for over 30 years. Thousands of enthralled children and their parents have delighted in the unique educational entertainment provided by Diane and Stu with Freshwater Pearls Puppetry and Neptune's Keep music duo. As guest soloists/accompanists, this affable couple brings their musical and scientific expertise to Fae By Nature Choral Works, along with a bit of theatrical magic. They have an easy rapport with young singers.
Fae By Nature is not only a publisher of choral works, but a new musical genre created by singer-composer Diane Rains. It exists at the intersection of fantasy and naturalism, where science, imagination, musicality, and emotion reside. Living in the very heart of this unusual music, Diane and Stu are uniquely suited to the performance of Fae By Nature choral works.
Diane is an accessible composer. She is happy to assist choir directors by email, helping them find the right style, choreography, and expression for her choral pieces. In western Wisconsin and the Twin Cities area, Diane is sometimes available to attend a choir rehearsal in person as a consultant. She can share, in greater depth, the nature science behind her choral works. And when the season is right, Diane might bring a live moth or two to show singers.
Diane can also be hired, for a reasonable fee, as a guest singer/soloist, or accompanist on piano, Celesta, frame drum, and Shruti box for choral performances.
For a truly magical concert experience, Diane can appear in full costume as Mermaid Galene or Faerie Galene Meadowmoth. Imagine the surprise and delight of audiences when a live mermaid lends her siren voice and shimmery tail to the choir's performance! And how enchanting it will be when a faerie with glorious wings flits onstage to sing or play instrumental accompaniment. Magic!
For over three decades, Stu Janis has enhanced his wife's creative works with dazzling hammered dulcimer and concertina accompaniment. Stu is a member of three professional bands: Greenwood Tree, Neptune's Keep, and Eisner's Klezmorim.
He is also popular as a choral accompanist. In addition to Diane's original compostions, Stu specializes in the works of Malcolm Dalglish for choir and hammered dulcimer. Stu has performed Dalglish pieces with several choirs in the Twin Cities area, including VocalEssence and the Minnesota Choral Directors Association.
And there is no one better suited to perform accompaniment for his wife's choral imaginings! Whether appearing as mild-mannered human or pirate-elf, Stu coaxes precision and heartfelt expression from dulcimer, concertina, and handpan.

On sultry summer nights, I love to peer out our second story window into the darkness to catch a glimpse of the secret comings and goings of night creatures. If there's a bit of moon, I might observe deer or fox, bat or raccoon busy in the fullness of their nocturnal lives. If it's not windy, not too dry, and I'm very lucky, I might be treated to the enchanting vision of a prairie full of sparkles: fireflies! And I know that these faerielike insects aren't just flitting about randomly. They are, like all species on this planet, driven by a dramatic biological imperative: Be seen! Be recognized! Find love! These are my favorite nights of summer.

If any earthly creature can be said to own the sky, it must surely be the swallow. With an aerial bravado born of acrobatic agility, breathtaking speed, and balletic grace, swallows on the wing are a wonder to behold. Flight is everything to these ambitious birds: communication, migration, romance, and, (one can’t help but think), the sheer joy of air!

Endless sky, worlds above worlds —
that’s where I play.
Pirouetting on wind-whirling wings,
I lift up the day.
Featherlight Queen of Air, I see all

On a crystal cold day in deep midwinter, when even the north wind’s icy tongue was silent and humble, I stood beside white acres of sleeping farmland and marveled. Across a quilted landscape of glittering snow, nothing moved but my own rhythmic puffs of frosted breath. It was a moment of pure, unbroken calm and beauty. I had stepped into a diamond world, a precious, foreign realm.
Suddenly, a small flurry of motion at the snowfield’s edge caught my attention. I thought at first that a burst of breeze had stirred the featherlight snow. But in an instant, a cloud of lively white birds with black-tipped wings leapt up and poured into the air like a genie from his bottle. And I was granted a wish that I didn’t know I had desired.
Magical creatures! Buntings of snow!
Under the sundogs' icy glow —

shadows are skipping over the snow.
Restless buntings of snow.
Flocks of white birds flush and splinter

far from the bitter Arctic winter,

Murmurrations right and left!

Avian nations’ warp and weft,
weaving tales in the snow.

Like a rider on a carousel, the lives of migrating birds rise and fall, move away, and come back around again with each season. They settle for a time, fall in love, and immerse themselves in family life. But soon the deep urgings of their migratory imperative push and pull their heartstrings, playing an ancient, eternally repeating melody that impels them to flee.
So it is with some humans: sailors, deckhands, adventurers. Home, seasons, someone left behind.

They seem to have something to say.

It’s… murder!
Next thing you know, others arrive,
until there’s three dozen or more.
Their furious wings split the twilight sky,
like a scene from some legend of yore.
They cover the trees in a sooty black fog.
It’s a conference — a gathering of clans.
It’s… murder!
But a murder of crows is a beautiful thing
when they take to the sky on ebony wing.
Even though they really can’t sing,
they communicate sophisticatedly
about… murder!
The truth is that crows are funny and smart,
devoted to family, and partial to art.
They even have a cousin who will sit on your shoulder
and say “Nevermore!”
They love to solve puzzles. They play in the snow.
They’re available for consultation when you need an expert
on… murder!

We have studied them, worshipped them, made art about them, and exploited them. We seek warmth. We drink and bathe. We breathe. We plant and build. So, in some fashion, does every other form of life on our planet, but only humans are powerful enough to alter the elements on a planetary scale. Only we are capable of breaking them, potentially beyond repair. Are we wise enough to protect the indispensable four?

Our planet Earth rotates and revolves like a ballerina, pirouetting and leaping across the stage of Space in an endlessly repeating pas de deux with the Sun. And all the creatures of Earth dance along. Each species has its own unique role in the performance, but all dance the circle dance. Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. We start, we move, we come back around to where we began.
Perhaps the most obvious and delicate symbol of life’s periodicity is the seasonal cycle of migratory birds. Migration, nesting, fledging, migration. To know where we are on the ever-turning Wheel of the Year, we need only listen to the voices of birds and look to the skies!
Come, birds of Winter, to me.
Come, Nuthatch and Crow from your tree.
Come, Blue Jay and Finch from the air.
With singing, these gifts for you I bear.
Sweet birds of Springtime, hear my call.
In friendship, I welcome you all
from faraway lands where you bided
‘til our blustering, cold winds had subsided.
Oh, Bluebirds of Summer in the nest.
And Swallows — swoop east and dart west!
Fecundity and growth be your gift.
May your children be airborne and swift.

what a beautiful world!
Morning's kiss on sleeping lilies
makes their blooms unfurl.
Bluebirds laugh and foxes play,
ducklings swim and willows sway.
Dewdrop diamonds shine in the sun
among the faerie fae.
Stories told in faerie rings,
while sylvan folk all gather round,
say, “Hold the wild things to your heart.
Don’t let them vanish without a sound.”

Most Fae By Nature choral pieces are available in two versions: open score (all voices and instruments, each on a separate staff), and instrumental accompanist score. Some accompanist scores are condensed (melody line voices only and instruments) and some are reduced (each instrument on its own staff, and all voices together on one staff). If you don't see an accompanist score in our store, email us! We can create one for you as a custom order.
